Italian Plywood Dining Chairs Attributed to Molteni, 1970s, Set of 4
A vintage set of four Italian dining chairs in warm-toned curved plywood and wood, attributed to Molteni and produced in Italy during the 1970s. Characterised by their sculpted plywood seats, tall rounded backrests and architectural solid-wood frames, these Italian modernist dining chairs closely relate to furniture associated with Afra & Tobia Scarpa for Molteni, although the designer of this particular model has not been documented.

The chairs have a restrained architectural construction, balancing straight square-section legs and rails with a single curved plywood shell forming the seat and tall backrest. A subtle upward curve at the front of the seat gives the otherwise geometric silhouette a softer sculptural quality, while the rounded upper corners of the backrest introduce another gentle counterpoint. The warm finish highlights the natural grain across both the solid frame and veneered plywood surfaces, with visible joinery and slim raised side rails adding to the chairs’ crafted character.
The design is closely related to the work Afra & Tobia Scarpa created for Molteni during the same period, particularly in its restrained geometry, sculptural use of wood and refined construction. While the visual connection is strong, the couple’s authorship of this specific model has not been confirmed.
Condition
Good vintage condition with signs of age and use consistent with its period. The wood and plywood surfaces show scratches, scuffs, small marks and areas of finish wear throughout. There is a more noticeable area of finish / veneer loss along the upper edge of one backrest, together with smaller edge nicks and abrasions to the backs, seats and legs. Some variation in tone is visible between the chairs. The set presents well overall, with the age-related wear contributing to its original vintage character.
